Just in Case: The Facts

Your horse may be young and healthy now, but it is still a good idea to make a plan just in case. If the worst happens and your horse suddenly falls ill or is injured, would know what to do? Calling the vet is the obvious first step but what next? What if you are left with no choice but to have your companion put to sleep? What if your horse passes away suddenly due to natural causes? Nobody want to think about these things, but by making a plan now, it could save a lot of distress later. Making a plan doesn’t mean you intend to use it soon – but if the worst happens, you will know what to do.

Taking the Decision

Taking the decision to put your horse to sleep is one of the hardest choices you will ever make. You should discuss with your vet, who will be able to guide you and prevent your companion from unnecessary suffering.

Informing the Authorities

There is a legal requirement for horse owners to inform the relevant passport issuing organisation in the event of a horse’s death. You will also need to inform your horse’s vet, physio and dental practice.
