Not all things work for all horses – it depends on the individual horse’s nature and circumstances. But here are some ideas:
- Make sure your horse is able to see other horses nearby.
- Give them a ball to play with.
- Put the radio on in the background.
- Install a stable mirror.
- Give them some toys to play with
- Drill a hole in a swede or turnip and hang it from the ceiling on a string.
- Horses have evolved to eat for 16 or more hours a day so ensuring they have enough to eat is an excellent way to relieve their boredom. If you are worried about their weight and need to restrict how much food they eat, try putting food in a small-holed net.
- Spread out feeds through the day as much as possible, so that your horse receives his or her food in a number of smaller feeds that break up the day.
- Exercise your horse as often as possible by going for a ride or walking in-hand – but only when the weather is appropriate and it is safe to do so.
- Provide them with a vitamin or mineral lick.
- Spend more time grooming your horse.
- Consider the nutritional requirements of a stabled horse. Their feeding regime may need to be altered.
