The Rare Breeds Survival Trust (RBST) charity works to save and safeguard of rare and native equine breeds. They have highlighted that the Eriskay pony and Suffolk horse are the two most endangered horse breeds in the UK.
Two Rare Horse Breeds in Danger of Extinction
The Eriskay pony only has three registered foals, and considering they are known a strong and hardy breed from the Scottish Western Isles, it has surprised them with how little they are breeding.
Similarly, the Suffolk horse, known as the oldest native heavy horse in the UK, has seen fewer males siring foals. This is very concerning for their population numbers and genetic diversity, especially due to their heritage. Both rare breeds are now in the RBST Watchlist priority category.
More positively, other rare equine breeds are now starting to populate. The Dartmoor pony has moved onto the watchlist’s ‘at risk’ section in a downgrade, as its genetic diversity has increased. The New Forest pony has also echoed this trend with more stability.
The RBST’s Chief Executive said: “For some rare equines the number of breeders has increased steadily, thanks to a strong market and growing appreciation of their unique characteristics and range of uses, from forestry to riding schools.
“The picture remains concerning for some of our rarest breeds, especially the Eriskay pony and Suffolk horse. We are keeping a close watch on the emerging impacts of the economic downturn, especially as it relates to small pony breeds.”
