The Royal Veterinary College (RVC) and Equine Register have partnered to carry out a research project funded by the Horse Trust. They are asking horse owners and riders to use their phones to create a digital record of riding trips away from their yard or home in an attempt to control infectious equine disease.

The information – captured within Equine Register’s free app, Digital Stable as Record My Ride and Record My Journey will create a digital record to support biosecurity.
Infectious diseases have had major effects on the equestrian community over the years. The flu epidemic in 2020 closed the entire racing community, for example, and many recall the equine herpes virus (EHV) outbreak in 2021. Biosecurity is vital if diseases like these are to be brought under control.
Being able to record journeys with horses via an app is an easy way to track equine diseases so action can be taken to stop them spreading. Uploading of paperwork and vaccination records on the other hand is slow and so relatively ineffective.
All the data uploaded to the app will remain anonymous and it’s hoped the analysis will help scientists better understand how infectious diseases in horses are transmitted and spread.
