A group charities and organisations have published the results of a survey that investigated the impact of the cost-of-living crisis on horse lovers.

More than 8,000 horse owners took part in the survey. The figures showed almost one in five horse owners (20%) are having to consider difficult decisions, such as selling or even euthanising their horse because of rising costs.
The data also suggested many owners prioritise caring for their horse over themselves. Just under 20% said they have cut the amount they spend on horse care, with nearly half cutting spending in other areas to help pay for their horse.
The survey highlighted the significant impact on equine welfare as some owners (0.7%) can’t meet their horses’ basic needs. 15.7% are extending the time between visits and 5.6% are delaying veterinary visits with 7.1% either reducing or stopping vaccinations.
Increases in prices for feed, forage, bedding and fuel were affecting 90% of respondents, and many horse owners are worried about the impact price rises in the long term.
A second survey looked into the cost-of-living crisis and its impact on equine welfare establishments. Nearly half of the 36 centres completing the survey intend to minimise the number of horses they take in and will implement stricter selection criteria. Just under 25% of respondents are going to stop taking in new horses altogether.
