How We Grieve The Loss of a Horse

None of us wants to think about it, but at some point every owner will experience the pain of losing their beloved horse companion. Read our advice on how we grieve the loss of a horse…

How We Grieve The Loss of a Horse

“It’s only a horse.” As horse riders and owners, we’ve all heard this sentiment. It may have been when we’ve missed a social engagement so we can change a poultice or after we’ve spoken fondly of our horses’ achievements, as we would with other – human – members of our family.

This is because to us, our horses are members of the family. The emotional, physical and financial investments we make in them run deep. When they inevitably have to leave us, either because they’ reach the natural end of their lives or because of accident or injury, it’s not ‘only a horse’ that we have to live without. The bond between us has built up over time and took a great patience. It’s  a reliable comfort we’ve grown to depend on and, in many cases, means future plans crumble. Losing a horse means a momentous change in lifestyle, as horse ownership takes up a lot of time and is often at the root of our social circle.

The weight of grief can seem too heavy to lift, especially in the very early stages. But there is light at the end of the tunnel – the day will come, in time, when you are able to look back on the memory of your horse with fondness, rather than pain. The way in which you grieve and how long you will need to feel yourself again is totally personal to you.
